The Observer Mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States, who arrived in Ashgabat at the invitation of the Turkmen side to observe the February 12 presidential election, started its work in Turkmenistan.
As is known, the observers from European countries and the authoritative international organizations were invited to our country on the initiative of the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to observe the presidential election and the vote count on the Election Day within their authorities and in line with legal norms. The office supplied with equipment and communications technologies was opened in Ashgabat with the assistance of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda to create a favourable work environment for the Mission headquarters. The Observer Mission members are responsible for facilitate accreditation of observers, tackling organisational issues, delegating observers to the regions, developing the format and reviewing the observers’ reports and liaising with other Observer Missions.
Upon arriving in Ashgabat, the members of the Mission visited the Central Commission for Election and Referenda where they got acquainted with the calendar plan of activities scheduled by the Central Commission, the list of election districts and the membership of election commissions, election ballot templates and the work done on a local level.
Presenting the certificates to the accredited international observers from the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Chairman of the Central Commission emphasized that all the necessary conditions for the activities of international observers during the election campaign. Total of 60 international observers representing the CIS states, the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the CIS, the Belarusian-Russian Parliamentary Assembly and the CIS Executive Council are expected to arrive in Turkmenistan.
Ye. Sloboda emphasized that the CIS Observer Mission would carry out the activities in compliance with universally recognized international standards, independently, without interfering in the internal affairs of the state. The objective of the Mission is to facilitate free and democratic election.
