The official ceremony of opening the Year «Mary is the cultural capital of the Turkic world» took place in Mary, the administrative centre of Mary Velayat. The events that will be held in accordance with the honorary title delegated to the city have started there.
An improvised Turkmen village that was settled on the square in front of the building of the Ruhyet Palace. Craftsmen's works were showcased in festively decorated yurtas.
Numerous ceremony participants, including deputies of the Mejlis, heads and representatives of the Ministry of Culture, public organisations as well as scientists, workers of culture and art, journalists, students and delegations of the countries participating in the event gathered together at the Ruhyet Palace.
Speaking about the significance of the event, TURKSOY Secretary General Dusanbay Kaseinov expressed deep gratitude to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for enhancement of a constructive intergovernmental cooperation that promoted to preservig and developing Turkic people's culture and art. He noted that today, the Ancient Merv that was included into the UNESCO World Heritage List picked up the baton of the cultural capital of Turkic World – 2015.
A big concert programme included national melodies and songs, bright choreographic compositions and folklore performances that reflected the unique customs and traditions of Turkic people, which were carried out through the centuries and carefully preserved till present days.
Famous signers inspiredly performed Kazakh, Tatar, Turkish, Yakut, Khakas, Tuva, Altai melodies and songs.
Turkmen art was represented by famous dancing, folklore and musical groups of our country and popular singers of national songs.
One of the first events held in Mary within the framework of the delegated to the city status of the cultural capital of the Turkic world – 2015 was an international exposition of works of fine, decorative and applied and photo arts. The exposition opening ceremony took place in Mary Velayat Museum of Local History with participation of the heads and representatives of TURKSOY, numerous foreign guests and local citizens.
An excursion to the Local History Museum was organised for guests to our country. The museum funds, including its branches showcase over 60,000 exhibits – monuments of the Turkmen people's history, culture and art. Ancient national dresses, magnificent carpets, silver jewelry, works of local craftsmen, the collection of treasures of an ancient culture that was discovered by archaeologists at the site of once flourishing civilizations, household items, documents on the local history and many other exhibits enrich the wealth of the museum's collection.
Upon completion of the excursion, the guests were invited to the exhibition hall of Mary branch of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, where the current achievements of the velayat, including the plan for development of private industries were presented.
The programme of the introductory events prepared for foreign uests included visit to the Ancient Merv State Historical and Cultural Reserve, where they got acquainted with the unique architectural monuments – Sultan Sanjar's Masoleum, the Mosque of Hodja Yusuf Khamedani, Erk Kala and Gyzgala ancient fortresses.
An improvised Turkmen village, where guests could see the life, traditional crafts of Turkmen people and try the dishes of the national cuisine as well as enjoy the grace of Ahalteke horses and proud gravity of 'shipы of the desert' – camels.
Participants of the cultural event also visited Mary Velayat Library.
Upon returning to Ashgabat, participants of the ceremony will continue their acquaintance with the historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people visiting museums and sights of the Turkmen capital.
