A meeting with an expert group of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR), who had arrived in the Turkmen capital for a working visit, was held at the Central Commission for Election and Referenda of Turkmenistan.
The brief overview of the electoral law of Turkmenistan, including the Law of Turkmenistan on the Election of the President of Turkmenistan, was presented to the representatives of this authoritative international organization during the meeting. It was noted that the step-by-step process of reforms of the regulatory framework, including such its essential component as the electoral law, had been launched in Turkmenistan in order to strengthen the democratic foundations of the state and society.
The Central Commission members informed the OSCE/ODIHR experts of the work carried out in the framework of the presidential campaign. It was noted that in accordance with the laws of Turkmenistan the early voting started on February 2. The Observer Mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States will conduct the monitoring the election process which is evidence for Turkmenistan’s openness and interest in equal constructive partnership. All necessary measures have been taken so that the canvassing campaign can be held in a free atmosphere, the presidential candidates can present their election pledges and the electorates can learn and discuss the candidates’ election programmes and make a deliberate choice.
The OSCE/ODIHR delegation was received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where the ways to intensify further collaboration in the wide range of fields were discussed.
During the visit to Turkmenistan the experts of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights are expected to have meetings with the heads and representatives at the Mejlis, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan, the State Committee for Television, Radio and Cinematography, the State News Agency and the public organisations.
