The Central Commission for Election and Referenda held a regular meeting. Its agenda focused on the organizational issues of the February 12 presidential election. The members of the Central Commission, the working groups of the Central Commission, chairmen of velayat and Ashgabat election commissions, leading specialists of the Democratic Party and public organisations, national observers and journalists participated in the meeting.
Opening the meeting, the Chairman of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda reviewed the work done since the election campaign was launched emphasizing that it had been carried out within the election law and according to schedule of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda.
The meeting agenda focused on the organizational issues, including the ban on the canvassing campaign the day before the election. In accordance with the Law on the Election of the President of Turkmenistan the campaign ends the day before the election. The decision to observe election silence on February 11 was adopted.
Chairmen of election commissions of velayats and Ashgabat reported on the readiness for the important political event. They reported on the process of early voting taking place throughout the country.
Commenting on the reports and giving specific instructions on the holding of the presidential election, the Central Commission for Election and Referenda instructed to facilitate the effective activity of the CIS Observer Mission on local level.
The other issues regarding the organization and holding of the election were discussed and the decisions were adopted during the meeting.

Turkmenistan is on the threshold of the important event. Little time has left before polling stations throughout the country open the doors to Turkmen citizens who will come there to exercise their constitutional right, perform their civic duty and elect the leader of Turkmenistan. The election of the President of Turkmenistan will be another vivid evidence for the irreversibility in the democratization process in the modern Turkmen society that is preparing to choose the worthiest of eight presidential candidates in a free and transparent atmosphere being aware of its awesome responsibility for the future of the Motherland.
The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan has conducted the significant work that involved government authorities of all levels and public organisations. The current election law and standards of international law were met at the preparation stage of the election campaign.
Polling stations throughout country are and adequately equipped with transparent ballot boxes, ballot papers, reference and methodological materials, communications facilities and office equipment. Citizens will exercise their vote in polling booths in the special premises.
Election commissions that consisted of representatives of labour collectives and public organisations took a responsible approach to their duties. Activists carried out the work to explain their rights and obligations as eligible voters to citizens of Turkmenistan that had the heavy massive turnout increased as a result. Citizens had an opportunity to vote early. Their ballot papers will be kept in the sealed ballot boxes until the votes are counted.
An important role in the activity of election commissions was assigned to the authorized representatives of presidential candidates who assisted in organizing and holding meetings with the electorates. These meetings were held according to schedule. Citizens were informed of the date and place of the meeting through the mass media. All the candidates had equal opportunity to run their election campaign.
Numerous letters and telephone calls with the questions, petitions and recommendations of Turkmen citizens to the presidential candidates to election commissions vividly testify to their consciousness and desire to take an active part in life of the state and society. Citizens’ petitions were collected, systematized and given to the presidential candidates for consideration.
In this context it should be noted that the world community is showing keen interest in Turkmenistan. As was reported, the CIS Observer Mission represented by the CIS countries, the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarusian-Russian Union and the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States arrived in the Turkmen capital at the invitation of the President of Turkmenistan.
