All the candidates standing for the post of the President of Turkmenistan cast their votes during the February 12 presidential election. This important political action is a critical step towards democratization of the modern Turkmen society and enhancement of the principles of genuine sovereignty of the people that are inherent in the Turkmen nation.
On that day the presidential candidates were the first to come to the polling stations that opened at 8 a.m. across the country to give their votes for the worthiest candidate. The presidential election at polling stations in all the constituencies and diplomatic representations of Turkmenistan in foreign countries began with the ceremony of hoisting the National Flag and performing the National Anthem of Turkmenistan.
A presidential candidate Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov came to polling station 11 in Chandybil Etrap in Ashgabat together with his father, son and grandson. This fact manifests the commitment to the age-old traditions of the Turkmen people, including such fundamental ones as the profound respect for the wordly-wise elders, the irrefutable authority of the older generation and the practice of reaching crucial decisions together whether it is family council or popular assembly when the opinion of the elders is given the decisive role to.
Myalikguly Berdimuhamedov was the first to exercise his constitutional right. A presidential candidate Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and his son cast their votes. The Turkmen leader wished those present the success in holding this important political action and expressed belief that the presidential election would be held throughout the country at the high organizational level.
The national leader expressed best wishes to the other presidential candidates noting that they all were the worthy and respectable people. The Turkmen leader expressed belief that exercising free will Turkmen citizens would make a deliberate decision on such a crucial choice.
The other presidential candidates performed their duty to the Motherland. Kakageldy Abdyllaev cast his vote at polling station 3 in Mary, Saparmyrat Batyrov – at polling station 27 in Azatlyk Etrap in Ashgabat, Rejep Nazarov – at polling station16 in Abadanlyk Gengeshlik in Gubadag Etrap in Dashoguz Velayat, Esendurdy Gayypov – at polling station 16 in Galkynysh Etrap in Lebap Velayat, Gurbanmammet Mollanyyazov – at polling station 35 in Balkanabat, Yarmuhammet Orazgulyev – at polling station 39 in Geoktepe Etrap in Ahal Velayat and Annageldi Yazmyradov – at polling station 66 in Kopetdag Etrap in Ashgabat.
Vivid evidence for democracy and free will of the election process in 2012 is nomination and registration of eight candidates in the presidential campaign and the presidential election. In compliance with the current election law of Turkmenistan and standards of international law they all had an equal opportunity to run their election campaign, meet with the electorates and access to television, radio and the print media to present the election programmes.
An atmosphere of democracy and free will of the election process allowed all the presidential candidates to widely present their election programmes to the electorate and the voters to freely discuss and evaluated these programmes which helped them to make a deliberate choice.
It should be noted that the election process was monitored by national and international observers which is evidence for the keen interest that this important political action has drawn among the world community.
