Meeting of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda

The Central Commission for Election and Referenda held a meeting to consider the outcomes of the presidential election.

This important political action that started over three months ago and successfully finished last Sunday on February 12 was held in an atmosphere of openness and transparency and showed that the ongoing democratic processes in the Turkmen society and the growth of civil consciousness of citizens of Turkmenistan were irreversible.

Opening the meeting, the Chairman of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda congratulated the meeting participants on this remarkable event that added one of the brightest pages to the chronicles of the modern epoch. Demonstrating the indissoluble unity and solidarity and the adherence to the ancestors’ precepts, the Turkmen people made a crucial step towards state development and establishment of genuine democracy in the country.

It was noted during the meeting that the presidential election in Turkmenistan had been held at the high organizational level and in compliance with the national laws and standards of international law. 96.7 percent of the electorate, or 2.888,887 citizens voted in the presidential election which testified to their high civil activity and deliberate desire to take an active part in the democratic process in Turkmenistan.

The election of the President of Turkmenistan held on February 12, 2012 aroused keen interest worldwide. The CIS Observers Mission, the delegtaion of the UN and other international organizations and foreign journalists who had an opportunity to monitor the election campaign and got evidence that the election were held in the atmosphere of openness and transparency are visiting our country these days.

Announcing the final outcomes of the presidential election, the Chairman of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda reported that after considering the protocols provided by velayat, etrap, municipal and divisional election commissions, the Central Commission for Election and Referenda enacted to consider Gurbanguly Malikgulyyevich Berdimuhamedov who had obtained the majority of votes (97.14 percent) elected as the President of Turkmenistan. The relevant Resolution secured this fact.

After the meeting was concluded, the Chairman of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda thanked the meeting participants and all those engaged in preparing for and holding the election campaign, including the mass media, for providing the unbiased information on the election process and ensuring that the election were held at the high organizational level and highly evaluated their contribution to strengthening further the democratic foundations of the Turkmen state.
