The International Conference “Turkmenistan-UN: 20 Years of Cooperation” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s accession to the United Nations was held in Ashgabat. The forum brought together the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Ashgabat, heads of the agencies and structures of the United Nations and the other international organisations and their partners, including the ministries, departments and public organisations of our country, Turkmen and foreign journalists in the conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
The welcome address of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was presented during the forum. In his address the Turkmen leader underlined particular significance that Turkmenistan attached to cooperation with the UN.
In his statement UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon noted that for twenty years Turkmenistan and the UN, shoulder to shoulder, have been carrying out large-scale work in the important sectors such as energy security, transport, environmental protection, counteraction against illicit drug trafficking, terrorism and extremism.
Emphasizing that the UN recognized the status of neutrality of Turkmenistan in 1995, the UN Secretary-General underscored the timeliness of the initiatives put forward by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to settle the situation in Afghanistan and thanked the Turkmen leader for providing support in opening the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat. Turkmenistan is making significant progress in fulfilling the tasks set to all mankind in the new millennium and applying every effort to promote democracy and civil society and ensure the participation in decision making and access to information and its transparency, stated the UN Secretary-General.
In their reports the forum participants spotlighted the major stages and outcomes of the foreign policy of Turkmenistan that acceded to the United Nations twenty years ago. Addressing the forum, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, Miroslav Jenca noted that the Centre was currently conducting monitoring and analysis of regional challenge and actively involved in the activities to address development issues for Central Asia.
The forum participants adopted the Address to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and expressed belief that the fruitful Turkmenistan-UN dialogue would continue in the future.
