The Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, which was established in 1951 on the base of Turkmen branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR as the highest scientific institution of the republic, which directs and coordinates scientific and research works in natural and public sciences, observes its 70th anniversary in June. Famous soviet scientists made huge contribution to the formation of national schools in various directions of these sciences and to development of scientific personnel of Turkmenistan.
Numerous philosophic, historical and law, archaeological, ethnographic, psychological, literary science and folkloristic, language study and oriental science works have been published for the years of work of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan. Scientific institutes of the Academy of Sciences were developing physical, chemical, biological, technical and agricultural sciences, Turkmen scientists conducted studies in geology, geophysics and seismology.
Turkmen science had leading positions in number of directions. Thus, solar technologies, which was successfully developed from the 60s, have brought Turkmenistan to the level of coordination center of geotechnical studies for use of solar energy in agricultural complex of the USSR. Work of Desert Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan had not only all-union but international importance. Back in 1976, the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan has been awarded with the Order of Peoples' Friendship for achievements in fundamental and applied sciences.
Today, the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan works in fundamentally new realities, which dictate new tasks and new approaches to the management and investments to the science. They are related to the adaptation of national science to conditions of market economy and establishment of the system of economic and other measures stimulating scientific, technical and research activity, development of applied studies and introduction of innovative developments to production. The science has an important role in digitization of education and bringing of its closer to the requirements of real economy, in adding innovative character to the production.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov highlights that the place and role of Turkmenistan in the global economy in the XXI century has to be determined by the level of scientific and technical development, by the ability to create and replicate own and use imported scientific technologies, by the presence of the country in the world market of new technologies. Making conditions for use of the best world practice, the state directs the scientists to development of the projects of full innovative cycle, strengthening of relations of profile scientific and research institutes with higher educational facilities and economic enterprises, formation of market of intellectual property in the country.
