President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov took part in the Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference

Today President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the invitation of Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping has taken part online in the Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference, which started today its work in the of the capital Peoples Republic of China - Beijing.

The forum on the theme: «Sustainable Transport, Sustainable Development», held in a hybrid format, urged to give a new powerful stimulus to transport development on the global scale that has especially a great value for achievement of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Adoption of this all-important international document by the United Nations Organization this year declared at the initiative of Turkmenistan as International year of peace and trust, and also the invitation of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the present forum of high level visually testify to the high international authority of our Fatherland and wide recognition of initiatives put forward by the Turkmen leader and his progressive foreign policy built on principles of peaceful disposition and mutually beneficial partnership equal in rights.

Let's remind that the first Global Sustainable Transport Conference under the aegis of the United Nations, taken place in November, 2016, was held in Ashkhabad and became one of the important actions offered by the Turkmen party with a view of expansion of cooperation in the sphere of transport.

Today this relay race was accepted by China, which has become co-organizer of a three-day forum, which takes place with wide representation of governments, business, civil society of some countries, and also the largest international structures, first of all the United Nations.

In the invitation letter directed to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping underlined that it is good possibility to share experience in the field of sustainable development between members of the United Nations and to discuss plans on the deepening of cooperation. According to the Chinese leader, the forum will also stimulate international solidarity against COVID-19, joint realisation of the Agenda for the period until 2030 and world economy restoration.

The weightiness of the international conference is marked with participation in it UN Secretary General António Guterres whose speech became some kind of a prologue to the beginning of work of the representative forum.

Welcoming participants of the conference, the head of the United Nations noted the importance of the related theme, which reflects the general understanding of necessity of cooperation in the transport sphere, comprehension really great opportunities which are opened by this mutually beneficial partnership for countries, regions and the whole continents during the present uneasy time for the world economy.

Speaking on a special role of sustainable transport in global development, António Guterres especially outlined a constructive position of independent neutral Turkmenistan taking the most active part in development of effective approaches to solution of actual problems of the present.

Then the floor was given to Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping.

Warmly having greeted participants of the second Global conference on the sustainable transport, held by the Chinese side together with the United Nations, the Chairman of the People’s Republic of China underlined that now the transport sphere is an important segment of world economy. As known from history, in ancient times trading caravans connected the East with the West, making the impact on effective character of relations between the countries and people, he continued.

Having noted that now because of the СOVID-19 pandemic, there arose some difficulties in international cooperation in the transport sphere, the Chairman of the People’s Republic of China pointed out necessity of joint struggle against this threat. In this connection, he noted, the world countries should make necessary efforts for intensification of cooperation in all modes of transport, full realisation of available potential.

Having noted that the transport sphere takes an important place in maintenance of peace and global sustainable development, and also plays an essential role in strengthening of interrelations between various countries and their people, Chairman Xi Jinping underlined that China is ready to share available possibilities and gained experience.

High guests of the present, already the second Global conference in number on sustainable transport, with great attention heard the speech of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The head of the Turkmen state first of all thanked Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping and Secretary General of the United Nations Organization António Guterres for the invitation to take part in this important and representative meeting.

As the head of Turkmenistan underlined, the start of the Ashkhabad process opening ample opportunities for development of multilateral interaction in the transport sphere on principles of state-private partnership became one of the significant practical results of the first Global conference.

As it was marked in his speech, being the consecutive supporter and the active participant of this dialogue, Turkmenistan at political level, first of all in the United Nations, throughout a number of years initiates significant, substantial and concrete resolutions in the field of sustainable transport.

- During the present session of Un General Assembly we will continue to increase efforts on strengthening of transport stability in the conditions of emergency situations, based on positions of the Resolution of UN General Assembly «Strengthening of relations between all modes of transport for stable and reliable international transportation with a view of sustainable development during and after the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19)», - the Turkmen leader stated, having reminded that this document was accepted at the initiative of Turkmenistan on July 29, this year.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov suggested returning to the proposal put forward by Turkmenistan earlier on development of a special inter-regional program of the United Nations on transport development. In his opinion, the purpose and problems of such program should be formulated proceeding from consistently accepted four resolutions of UN General Assembly on development of international partnership in the transport sphere, the Final document of the first Global conference on sustainable transport of 2016, other multilateral documents on strengthening of transport connectivity at the global level.

Using the possibility, the head of the Turkmen state drew the attention of participants of the forum to that fact that in the conditions of the pandemic especially vulnerable were developing countries, first of all, not having a direct access to the World Ocean. Namely, they strongly felt compelled restrictions in the transport sector. And for them it is for the same reason more difficult than others to get out to the post-crisis level.

- We are convinced that today in the name of the United Nations, the international institutes it is necessary to assist the world community and support this category of the states, including in overcoming of recession and systematic re-integration in world transport processes, - the leader of the nation stated.

Having invited the interested countries and international institutes to take part in this important forum, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stated that the Turkmen side as co-organizer of the forthcoming conference, is open to any substantial initiatives, offers and recommendations on its organization.

As was underlined, forms of such rapprochement, their geographical configuration, speed and modalities can be different. The main thing is that they should promote effective partnership with taking into account mutual interests, promoted global plans of sustainable development. And certainly, it would be free from politicisation.

- Turkmenistan confirms adherence to these purposes and principles and is ready for the closest constructive cooperation for their prompt realisation, - President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov underlined at the end of his video speech.

Having thanked for attention, the head of Turkmenistan wished all participants of the conference successes and fruitful work.

The representative structure of participants of the present forum, the productive discussion of the themes raised there became an indicator of commonness of problems and goals of different countries of the world interested in strengthening of constructive international cooperation in the sphere of sustainable transport for the benefit of universal peace, development and progress.
