Kyrk-kummet madrasah is another monument of Astana-baba

Another monument of the village of Astana-baba is the Akmukhammed-ishan madrasah, which was formerly called Kyrk-kummet “Forty domes”. The architectural style of the object belongs to the direction of folk architecture; the madrasah was built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.

Residents of the village began to dig out a madrasah on their own, located at an equal distance between the mausoleum of Alamberdar and the tomb of the beautiful Zubeida. At the time of the start of work, only one of the domes of the madrasah towered above the surface of the earth.

The building consisted of a rectangular courtyard, where the living rooms of students and a classroom with a domed hall were located, which simultaneously served as a mosque.

Like all other creations of Turkmen architects of that period, the madrasah was entirely built of adobe bricks and plastered with clay mortar. By that time, the Silk Road no longer existed, and professional associations of builders disappeared. However, despite a sharp decline in the quality of the technique used in the construction, the Akmukhammed-Ishan madrasah managed to preserve both the plasticity of the forms and the integrity of the image. This object, partially reconstructed today, takes its rightful place in a series of remarkable, original monuments of Turkmen architecture.
