Though the Karakum Desert seems to be boundless, it has borders. Suddenly blooming oases where cool water babbles in waterways, young mulberry trees on the edges of green fields turn towards the sun unfold before the eyes amidst the sands. In some parts of the region the Karakum Desert breaks at the foot of the high mountains. Such as, for example, the Big Balkhans that tower above the desert like a rocky island.
In the north the Karakum Desert borders on the towering steeps of the Ustyurt Plateau, silver surface of the Sarakamysh Lake, emerald thickets of cane on the banks of this huge lake. This land attracts by the harsh landscapes of plateaus and precipices, vast plains where the herds of koulans rambled in remote times. The oases of Dashoguz Velayat, ancient Kunya Urgench lie nearby.
In the south, in the heart of the great desert the time hid the artefacts we inherited from the ancient country of Margush: the Ancient Merv historical reserve that has remained in all its beauty lies in the centre of the present-day Murghab oasis nearby the administrative centre of the region. The Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum of amazing beauty is believed to be its adornment. The slopes of the fantastically beautiful plateaus Badhyz and Karabil situated in the very south of the country, on both sides of the Murghab Valley are dressed in marvellous attire of herbs, irises and tulips in the springtime.
