A young Turkmen composer, teacher of the Special Musical Boarding School at the Turkmen National Conservatory named after M. Kuliyeva Kerim Dzhumagulyev, became a laureate of the V International Music Competition named after Alemdar Karamanov, which was recently held in the format of video recordings in the city of Guryevsk, Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation.

The organizers of the cultural event were the Center for Support and Development of Contemporary Art. A. Karamanova, Department for Culture, Youth Affairs, Tourism and Sports of the Administration of the Guryev Municipal District, as well as the Children's School of Arts named after A. Karamanova.

The competition was held in the following nominations: "Piano solo", "Piano ensemble", "Ensemble art", "Academic vocal solo". As well as "String instruments solo", "Wind and percussion instruments solo", "Art of the accompanist", "Musical and pedagogical skills", "Composition", "Composer-performer".

A large number of musicians and composers of six age categories from different cities of Russia, countries of the far and near abroad responded to participate in the creative competition. The winners were chosen by a competent jury, which included well-known professors from the leading music universities of the Russian Federation, as well as Professor Antonio Agostini of Viareggio University (Italy).

A participant from Turkmenistan, Kerim Dzhumagulyev, performed in the Composition nomination. The jury was presented with the author's musical compositions: “Pizzicato” for string orchestra, Toccata for organ, “Exclamation” (“Exclamation”) for string quartet, “Waltz-fireworks” for symphony orchestra, “Gözleriň” (“Your eyes”) for saxophone, viola and orchestra of Turkmen folk instruments. As well as "Bagtyýarly tansy" ("Spring Dance") for violin, clarinet, nagar and chamber orchestra, "Gözel Aşgabat" ("Beautiful Ashgabat") - a song for a soloist, mixed choir and pop-symphony orchestra.

All these works, each in their own way, reveal different facets of the author's talent and his creative interest in different styles, technical and artistic means available in the modern composer's arsenal.

Sharply dissonant, extremely expressive in tone of expression, the play “Exclamation” evokes an associative connection with the introspective orientation of the study by expressionist composers of the contradictory depths of the human soul and the borderline states of his consciousness. The festively sparkling, joyful, graceful "Waltz-Fireworks" brings an oriental rhythmic intonation flavor to the genre basis of European dance.

In "Toccata" the composer finds points of contact between one of the favorite genres of organ music of the European Baroque era with toccata as a quality of virtuoso technique inherent in Turkmen dutar performance. A no less difficult technical task is set by the author and the performers of the orchestral miniature "Pizzicato", which is based on a specific method of sound production on stringed bowed musical instruments.

The tendency to enrich the timbre coloring of a classical European-style orchestra by expanding its composition with folk oriental instruments and, as an artistic result, achieving new sound colors, can be traced in Bagtyýarlyk tansy. As a composer-melodist, Kerim Dzhumagulyev performs in the works “Gözleriň” and “Gözel Aşgabat”, where the author successfully solves the problem of creating an expressive cantilena and melodic vocal type.

The jury highly appreciated the talent of the young Turkmen composer, awarding him the II prize and the Special Prize "For the embodiment of national traditions in composer's work." An interesting refraction in the music of Kerim Dzhumagulyev of national traditions and academic music was especially noted by the organizing committee of the competition as a promising creative direction. Further progress along this path may lead to new ideas for the synthesis of national traditions with modern avant-garde compositional techniques.

Participation and victory in the competition is a significant event in the creative biography of Kerim Dzhumagulyev, a student of the famous Turkmen composer Bayramdurdy Khudainazarov. The experience gained in this competition will allow the young composer to conquer new professional heights and more than once declare the Turkmen school of composers outside our country, being a full-fledged successor and continuer of its glorious traditions.
