Unique samples of ancient ceramic supplements the Funds of the State Museum of Visual Arts of Turkmenistan

Numerous archaeological findings shedding the light on the history of ancient settlements were discovered during the work of joint Turkmen – French and Turkmen – Russian archaeological expeditions in the State Historical and Cultural Sanctuary “Abiverd”, which complex includes world known archaeological monuments of proto-city civilizations Namazga Depe, Altyn Depe, Ulug Depe and Gara Depe, After study and restoration, the part of it was handed of to the Museum of Visual Arts of the capital by the personnel of the sanctuary.


Ancient artefacts, hidden at some point in cultural layers of Ulug Depe and Namazga Depe, will occupy deserving place in the exposition “Ancient Art of Turkmenistan”. The visitors of the museum will familiarize with unique samples of ancient ceramics, among which there are not only the housewares but fine works of pottery art as well. Many of them are ornate with pictures of carpet patterns, animals and plants and all pictures are very realistic what indicates high level of development of art painting.

French specialist Estel Ottenwelter and manager of the workshop Mekan Annanurov carry out the restoration of ancient ceramic items in restoration workshop in “Abiverd” sanctuary. Owing to filigree work of the restoration masters, unique samples of ancient ceramics, which were handed to the museum, did not lose their authenticity.
