Turkmenistan-Pakistan: an important step along the way of long-term cooperation

The third meeting of the Turkmen-Pakistani Joint Intergovernmental Commission took place in Ashgabat. The heads and representatives of a number of leading sectoral ministries and departments of the two countries attended the meeting.

A representative delegation of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Co-Chairperson of the commission for Pakistan, arrived in the Turkmen capital to take part in the meeting.

During the meeting held in a business, constructive atmosphere the sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in fostering the intergovernmental cooperation and discussed a number of specific tasks on diversification of joint efforts with the aim to implement a huge potential of the Turkmen-Pakistani partnership. Underlining with satisfaction the dynamic character of the bilateral cooperation, the Co-Chairpersons expressed belief that the meeting would promote fostering the versatile contacts in the economic, trading, scientific and technological, humanitarian spheres in the interests of the two friendly peoples.

The meeting agenda included the issues on implementation of agreements achieved earlier, in particular, the recommendations of the second sitting of the Turkmen-Pakistani Joint Intergovernmental Commission. Underlining that within the period, cooperation in a number of key trends has been strengthened, the meeting participants called for diversification of the mutually beneficial cooperation in the trading, economic and transport spheres. Speaking about the favorable investment climate created in Turkmenistan for foreign partners’ activity, the representatives of the Pakistani delegation expressed the aspiration of Pakistani businessmen for widening their presence at the prospective Turkmen market to implement joint investment projects.

Particular attention was paid to the issues of enhancing cooperation in the fuel and energy sector. In this regard it was underlined the significance of implementation of a large-scale project on construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline that was aimed to ensure the long-term supplies of Turkmen natural gas to the largest countries of the South Asian region. The energy sector was also defined among the priority spheres of productive cooperation.

The issues of humanitarian cooperation were also discussed during the meeting. It was noted that Turkmenistan and Pakistan possessed the unique heritage of the spiritual and material culture, and the further development of cooperation in this sphere based on the historical and cultural closeness as well as scientific and educational relations would promote enhancing the ties of friendship between the people of the two countries.

In conclusion, head of the Pakistani delegation Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar expressed sincere gratitude to the President and Government of Turkmenistan for the cordial welcome and expressed belief that the agreements achieved during the meeting would be implemented in the near future, and would contribute to further enhancing of the mutually beneficial, traditionally friendly dialogue between Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Underlining the efficiency of the meeting, participants noted that the protocol signed on the outcomes of the sitting would allow significantly widening the frameworks of the bilateral cooperation, as well as would open up wide opportunities for efficient partnership in all spheres.

The fourth sitting of the Turkmen-Pakistani Joint Intergovernmental Commission is planned to be held in the capital of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan – Islamabad, in 2013.
