Aspects of Turkmenistan’s presiding over the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) discussed in Ashgabat

Enhancement of cooperation with authoritative international organisations was the main theme of the two-day meeting taken place in Ashgabat in the framework of the preparations for Turkmenistan’s presiding over the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS).

The forum held in the conference hall of the Ýyldyz Hotel was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Industry of our country with the support of the GIZ Programme on Transboundary Water Management in Central Asia.

The meeting brought together the representatives of various ministries and departments in the country, UN agencies as well as the European Union, the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, etc.

The representatives of international organization, national and foreign experts discussed the key spheres of cooperation during three years of the presidency of Turkmenistan over the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS). In particular, the meeting participants considered the initiatives put forward by Turkmenistan on the implementation of joint programmes aimed at improving environment, developing mechanisms to manage and efficiently use transboundary water resources and promoting the economic and social development of the Aral Sea region. It was also underlined the importance of the projects implemented within the framework of the Third Aral Sea Basin Programme.

Summing up the meeting, the forum participants called for enhancement of cooperation between the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) member states and leading international organizations and financial structures in a wide range of issues on environment protection and the Aral Sea sustainable development.
