UNESCO includes Novruz to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The decision was taken by the Committee for Protection of Intangible cultural heritage, which session was held in Ethiopia.

Joint application on including of Novruz Holiday was submitted by 12 stares, which celebrate this vernal equinox holiday. These are Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

Novruz is one of the most ancient holidays on the planet, which exists among many nations, including Turkmens, for many centuries and reflects the succession of traditions of hospitality, good neighbourhood, high principles of humanity and diligence and summons to friendship and harmony in the world. This holiday, which entered the world cultural treasury, bears enduring spiritual and moral values of human civilization.

During the 64th session of the UN general Assembly on February 19, 2010, the UN resolution declaring Novruz as International Holiday, which is to be observed during vernal equinox on March 21 – 22, was adopted.

The participant of the current session in Addis Ababa, the experts from 24 countries voted for supplement of two List of intangible cultural heritage. One of the lists incudes the monuments requiring immediate protection and another has representative character. It includes traditions and rites, which demonstrate cultural wealth of the planet and require the attention of the community. As for today, there are 336 elements in the Representative List.

One year ago in December 2015, the UNESCO Committee for Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which session was held in Namibia, included “Gyorogly” epic presented by the application of Turkmenistan into the Representative List of Intangible Cultural heritage.
