Turkmenistan entered the top twenty among 126 countries of the world in terms of philanthropy in the annual World Giving Index (WGI) report published in 2023.
The largest survey of philanthropy worldwide is published by the Charities Aid Foundation based on research conducted by the American Gallup Institute. The report considers charitable activities in three categories: donating money, volunteering time, and helping strangers (in %). The higher the country is in the ranking, the more people there are involved in charity work.
In the published rating, the overall indicator of charity in Turkmenistan was 43%, which was formed from the indicators of monetary donations (32%), helping a stranger (53%) and volunteering (43%). According to these indicators, Turkmenistan is ahead of all Central Asian states. With a total philanthropy score of 58%, the United States tops the list, followed by Greece at 16%.
The high position of Turkmenistan in the world ranking of charitable activities is due to the mentality and national traditions of the Turkmen people, who have always been distinguished by generosity, humanity and mutual assistance. These features of the national character are especially clearly manifested during the days of the holy month of Oraz - the time of kindness, mercy, generosity, care for one's neighbor.
Charity in Turkmenistan is supported by the state and society. In March 2021, a special Charity Fund named after Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to assist children in need of care was established in the country, which provides material assistance in providing them with medical services, restoring health and obtaining medicines, provides training in general education and specialized schools, providing special sports and other necessary accessories. Under the auspices of the Fund, the Children's Health and Rehabilitation Center will operate in the city of Arkadag, which is being built of national importance, where its headquarters will be located.
