Head of State Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov registered as a candidate for presidency

During the meeting of Central Commission for Elections and Referenda, the incumbent President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov had been registered as a candidate for the presidential post.

The chairman of Central Commission for Elections and Referenda had presented the Head of State Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov with the certificate of candidacy for the President of Turkmenistan.

Addressing at the meeting, Head of State stressed the importance of continuous improvement of the electoral system, including through greater use of international best practices.

Emphasizing the continuity of the democratic foundations, laid in ancient centuries, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov noted the considerable growth of the social and political culture of the society at present time. This evident from the fact of first-ever participation of candidates from three parties in presidential elections - the Democratic Party, the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Agrarian Party.

The Head of State expressed appreciation to all the members of the Democratic Party, as well as people all over the country for the nomination his candidacy for the President of Turkmenistan.

The candidacy of the incumbent Head of Turkmenistan was unanimously nominated by the participants of conference of the Democratic Party, held on 14 December. In accordance with the Electoral Code, the registration of candidates for the post of President of Turkmenistan, being the next stage of the pre-election campaign, has started on 24 December.

The nomination of several candidates for the highest state post clearly indicates on broad alternative basis of presidential elections, to be held on 12 February 2017. To date, the materials for the registration of several other candidates have been submitted for the Commission’s consideration. The initiative groups of citizens had wrapped up collecting of support signatures for their nominees.

In accordance with national law and international practice, all candidates have been vested with equal rights and opportunities for meetings with voters, presentation of election programs and campaigning, including in media. The organization of such activities is charged on election commissions jointly with the relevant bodies of local executive authorities, heads of enterprises, institutions and other organizations.

In the course of meeting, chairmen of the provincial election commissions presented reports to Central Commission for Elections and Referenda as well as other organizational issues on forthcoming elections were discussed.
