Turkmenistan receives the Certificate on including Nowruz Bayram into the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially informed Turkmenistan on including Nowruz Bayram into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The decision was adopted by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, taken place in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) on November 30, 2016.

The certificate presents the name of this holiday in the languages of those peoples, who widely celebrate the day of vernal equinox, and the countries, that applied for the certification. Among them are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.


According to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Nowruz is one of the ancient holidays, that living in the soul and memory of many peoples, including the Turkmen people for many centuries, embodies the continuity of the traditions of hospitality, good-neighborliness, the lofty principles of humanity and diligence, calling for friendship and harmony all around the world. Within millennia, it has accumulated immeasurable cultural treasures, the universal significance and enduring value of which have been recognized by the Community of Nations and secured by the special Resolution of the UN General Assembly on the International Day of Nowruz.

Today, Nowruz stands as a unique world phenomenon in all variety of its ancient and modern traditions. Turkmenistan has significantly contributed to this phenomenon. This holiday, that has arisen from deep philosophical views and taken a significant place in the system of spiritual values of the Turkmen people, has been enriched with new contents, contributing to revitalization of cultural, spiritual contacts with the peoples of the world.

Moreover, it is based on the values revered by all peoples at all times - peace, friendship, equality, good neighborliness, prosperity and progress.
