Meeting at the Mejlis of Turkmenistan

Today, the Mejlis hosted a meeting with Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Ms. Helga Schmid, who is in Turkmenistan on a visit.

During the meeting, Chairwoman of the Mejlis D.Gulmanova noted that one of the priority areas of the foreign policy strategy, successfully implemented under the leadership of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, is the development of long-term and effective cooperation with international organizations, including the OSCE, partnership with which has been expanding and strengthening every year, covering new directions.

The interlocutors expressed mutual interest in intensifying the inter-parliamentary dialogue, serving as one of the most important tools for promoting constructive ties, maintaining the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding between countries and peoples.

Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that Turkmenistan, as a democratic, legal and secular state, advances initiatives aimed at solving urgent problems on the global agenda, including the establishment of high humanistic ideals and values. Having proclaimed the protection of interests and human rights as a key aspect of state policy and recognizing the priority of generally recognized legal norms, our independent neutral country is steadily following its international obligations.

During the talk, the Secretary General emphasized the role of the policy of neutrality of Turkmenistan in the sphere of ensuring peace, security and sustainable development in the region and beyond. In particular, the progressive expansion of cooperation in the energy and environmental security, sustainable transport and water diplomacy was noted.

Noting the importance of the carried out work on the legislative support of the agreements reached recently between Turkmenistan and the OSCE, the interlocutors spoke in favor of expanding the exchange of experience in legislation, regular holding of bilateral inter-parliamentary meetings and consultations in order to further develop productive ties, bringing them to a qualitatively new level, meeting mutual interests.
