Issues of customs ethics discussed in Turkmenistan

A seminar on professional ethics has ended at the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan. This is reported by the website of the department.

The event, which was hosted by the World Customs Organization (WCO) with the financial support of USAID, brought together employees from the personnel departments of the Central Office of the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan and regional customs offices.

International experts were representatives of the World Customs Organization - Oluimo Da Silva, Dashgin Aliyev, Deputy Superintendent of Sri Lanka Customs Nandika Sanat Kumanayke.

They introduced the workshop participants to the good practices of integrity. The seminar program included such topics as the implementation of the principles of good faith in customs activities.

Customs officials familiarized themselves with the Arusha Declaration on Good Governance and Integrity in Customs. The Arusha Declaration is a key tool and an essential element of a global and effective approach to promoting integrity in customs.

Adopted in 1993, the declaration was subsequently supplemented by a "Guide to Self-Assessment", which explains how to implement the principles of this convention. The Arusha Declaration outlines 10 basic principles to be applied by customs authorities in developing their national "customs integrity" programmes. In 2003, a new version of the document was adopted.
