International experts: population census of Turkmenistan meets international standards

The State Committee of Turkmenistan on Statistics has published some results of the complete population and housing census of Turkmenistan, conducted from December 17 to 27, 2022 under the slogan "Population Census 2022: Cohesion, Happiness and a Bright Future!".

As noted on the website of the agency, in total, about 14 thousand people of temporary census staff took an active part in this large-scale state event. Domestic tablet computers and specialized software developed by Turkmen specialists were used during the census.

When conducting a complete census of the population and housing stock, 6 census forms were used. Daily data received via a dedicated communication line from regional statistical bodies from tablets were combined on a secure server of the central office of Turkmenstat.

High-level international experts of the United Nations Population Fund, who were present as observers at the events related to the complete population and housing census in Turkmenistan, noted that the preparation and conduct of this state event fully comply with international standards.

According to the results of a complete census of the population and housing stock, as of December 17, 2022, the population of Turkmenistan amounted to 7,057,841 people. Regionally, Mary velayat accounts for 22.9% of the population of the country, Dashoguz velayat - 22.0%, Lebap velayat - 20.5%, Ashgabat city - 14.6%, Akhal velayat - 12.5% and Balkan velayat - 7.5%. Almost 50% of the population are men and more than 50% are women. The urban population of the country was 47.1% and 52.9% - rural.

The age structure of the population is dominated by people of working age - 57%, the shares of the population younger and older than working age are 34.9% and 8.1%, respectively. According to the results of the housing census, 1,005,671 residential buildings were recorded, which is 12.4% more compared to the data of the census conducted in 2012, the number of residential premises increased by 13.6% and amounted to 1,344,268 units, and their total area increased by 24.5% and amounted to 165,167,523 square meters.

The results of the continuous population and housing census of Turkmenistan in 2022, characterizing the achievements in various regions of the country, will serve as an information database for the preparation of programs and strategies for the socio-economic development of the country and regions for the next few years.
