The Institute of Seismology and Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan held a scientific and theoretical conference dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake.

The theme of the event «Seismic risk and world experience» touched upon the issues of modern urban planning, taking into account historical data on earthquakes.

The conference was attended by representatives of the Research Institute of Earthquake Resistant Construction of the Ministry of Construction and Architecture of Turkmenistan, the Department for Coordination of Construction Works of the Ashgabat City Administration, specialists from the Digital Economy Development Department of the «Türkmenaragatnaşyk» Agency and the Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences.

Seismologist Jun Matsuo, a member of the delegation of experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Turkmenistan, spoke about productive cooperation with Turkmen colleagues and Japan’s experience in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters caused by earthquakes.

Currently, in our country, within the framework of the JICA technical partnership project, research work is being carried out to improve earthquake monitoring.

Seismic zoning maps are being developed for the cities of Arkadag and Balkanabat. Also, employees of the Research Institute of Seismology of Turkmenistan are studying regional and anomalous patterns of the seismic regime.

Integrated monitoring - seismic geophysical, geodynamic, hydrodynamic and geochemical, carried out by the Institute is key to ensuring the registration of earthquakes and prompt transmission of seismic information to the relevant authorities of Turkmenistan.

Learning practical skills in timely recognition and identification of potential hazards helps to increase resilience to natural disasters.
