Speaking at the 8th Asia-Pacific Urban Forum, held on October 23-25, 2023 in the Korean city of Suwon, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Korea B.Durdyev informed the participants that large-scale urban development programs are being actively implemented in Turkmenistan under the leadership of the President of the country Serdar Berdimuhamedov, aimed at ensuring the population’s access to safe and quality housing.
Over the years, Turkmenistan has demonstrated a strong commitment to urban planning taking into account the principles of sustainable development, which is clearly demonstrated by the “smart” city of Arkadag.
The 8th Asia-Pacific Cities Forum was organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and Suwon City Hall in partnership with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea, UN-Habitat, and Habitat for Humanity International Organization, and CityNet Association.
More than 1,800 representatives of national and local governments, research centers, the private sector, civil society and youth organizations from across the region took part in the Forum.
The main goal of the three-day Forum was to mobilize innovative solutions, joint actions and effective partnerships to achieve sustainable urban development.
As the Ambassador noted, the experience of building Arkadag city will serve as a model that demonstrates how “smart” cities can harmoniously combine economic prosperity with sustainable development.
And the Asia-Pacific countries can take advantage of this experience of innovative and “green” solutions with a sustainable development strategy.
As it’s known, Arkadag city is the owner of more than two dozen international certificates confirming achievements in various fields.
The Communiqué adopted at the end of the meeting calls on governments to accelerate action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and the New Urban Agenda.
