Specialists of the National Department for Preservation, Study and Restoration of the monuments of history and culture jointly with the specialist of the Kunya-Urgench State historical and Cultural Reserve started restoring the coating of the cupola of the mausoleum of Il-Arslan. The light-blue glazed tiles, the decorative dominant of the complex and expressive ornament will be restored on the dome, decorated with rhomboid patterns.

The mausoleum of Il-Arslan (12th century) ranks among the historical and cultural monuments of Turkmenistan, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to scientists, it is one of the unique examples of the architecture of pre-Mongolian Central Asia. The medieval architectural structure, combining original technical and artistic features, is distinguished by a well thought-out design: a cube with the prism of a drum and the external dome in the form of a tent of twelve faces. The main facade is divided into three deep arched niches and decorated with relief carved terracotta tiles with vegetal ornamentation. The twelve-sided dome of Il-Arslan, decorated with geometric patterns with blue tiles, is one of the oldest coverings preserved in Central Asia.

Ambitious projects are successfully implemented in Turkmenistan under the personal patronage of the Turkmen leader with the aim to preserve and popularize the historical and cultural heritage. The special Fund for the Preservation and Improvement of Historical and Cultural Monuments under the National Directorate for Preservation, Study and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Monuments meets one of the priorities of the state policy.
