The eight-month course «Fundamentals of medical and social work with a focus on social inclusion of persons with disabilities», organized with the support of UNICEF for the first graduating class of new specialists in the field of medical and social assistance, has completed. Along with theoretical topics and information on various modern professional methods, course participants gained deeper knowledge and skills in the field of early child development and early intervention.

The training expanded the capacity of Turkmenistan's new medical and social workers stationed in selected primary health care facilities to provide specialized services to promote social inclusion of children with disabilities and their families. These professionals have also acquired knowledge in specific technical areas such as early childhood mental health, physical and occupational therapy, communication, assistive technology and products.

The training of such specialists is consistent with national priorities for developing a skilled workforce to support vulnerable young children and their families. UNICEF expresses its readiness to continue to support Turkmenistan’s efforts to strengthen national capacity in the field of medical and social services and promote social inclusion.
