A meeting with Saber Azam, Regional Representative and Regional Coordinator of the UN High Commissioner for Refuges for Central Asia, who was on a visit to the Turkmen capital, was held at the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
The meeting agenda included the issues related to further development of constructive partnership between Turkmenistan and the UN structures.
Turkmenistan as a permanent member of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner's Programme actively works towards the implementation of practical measures to protect and empower refugees.
Positively evaluating the peace-building initiatives on global security and sustainable development put forward by the President of Turkmenistan from the high rostrum of the United Nations and the large-scale reforms taking place in all spheres of life of the Turkmen society during the years of independence, the UNHCR Regional Representative stated that his organisation was keenly interested in promoting long-term effective partnerships in order to meet the provisions of the UN conventions on human rights.
In this context a lively exchange of views on the prospects for cooperation in the legal sector took place. Speaking before the sixty-sixth session of the UN General Assembly President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said the goals of sustainable development could be achieved through addressing humanitarian issues, promoting the human rights, providing the opportunities for self-realization and guaranteeing a dignified and happy life to people.
Paying particular attention to cooperation with the international organisations in this sphere, including the UN humanitarian structures, our country attaches considerable importance to the study of best international practices in order to update further the national law-enforcement policy.
It was noted that the progress of our country in the sphere of human rights, including the right to citizenship, had been recognized by the world community and the authoritative international organisations. That is illustrated the fact that Ashgabat will be the venue for the international forum on the introduction of Turkmenistan’s achievements in granting citizenship to refugees and stateless persons which will be held in collaboration with UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2012.
Underlining the tremendous potential to enhance effective collaboration, the meeting participants expressed the willingness to intensify further partnership for the benefit of people.
During the visit to Turkmenistan the UNHCR Regional Representative had the meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Migration Service.
