Carpet makers who create unique hand-made masterpieces – national pride of Turkmen people, are the main characters of the exposition.

“Shepherds” by Aman Amangeldiyev is one of the brightest canvas of the topical exhibition. The work portrays the group of shepherds surrounded by the flock of sheep and reminds where wool thread that masters use to weave the carpets is taken from.

The work of Pyotr Tutinasov represent an old woman spinning the thread for future carpet. The artist expresses his admiration with hard work and talent of the masters highlighting the laborious task and responsibility of all stages of carpet making.

Another work of Aman Amnageldiyev included to the exposition is called “Turkmen Carpet Makers”. It shows five girls in bright national dress starting the work over hand-made canvas.

Carpet artist Ada Gutliyev is an honoured guest of the exposition. He won seven times annual creative contest on best artistic image of the beauty of ahalteke horses.

- For myself, the Days of Turkmen Horse and Carpet are the best in national calendar, - he says. High density of the carpets – 400 000 knots per square meter indicates the uniqueness of Turkmen carpets. Our canvas cannot be penetrated by the needle. If to pour some water, it will not trickle through but will stay on the surface. Isn’t it a magic?

But what is most important that today, the traditions, which are passed down through generations, are enriched by modern trends and new knowledge, the colour palette is expanded and technical methods are improved. The team of carpet makers, I work with, managed to weave double-sided carpet.

The pictures dedicated to fulling of felt mats take special place of the exposition. The felt mat is said to be a young sister of the carpet. The work “Makers of Felt Mats” by Nikolay Chervyakov is one of the impressive pictures of this subject. The artist captured the moment when tree women are ready to start fulling the mats and waiting for another woman who prepares the thread for future ornament.

The samples of the ornaments developed by the artists for carpets and felt mats are presented at the exhibition. Stylized picture with piala (teacup) set in pattern is one of the most memorable sketch. Colourful and original ornament without doubt will be popular among the felt mats makers.

Succession of the traditions in carpet making art is reflected in Aman Kuliyev’s “Years and Life”. The artist portrayed an old woman, whose face is covered with deep wrinkles and tired overworked hands rest peacefully under light neat shawl. Famous carpet maker is loved and respected by young masters. Her age and health do not allow her to work but she helps her fosters continuing the work of all her life with advices.

The exhibition admires and surprises and what is most important rises the pride for the talent and hard work of skilful masters. Hand-made canvases are the artistic embodiment of the evolution of cultural traditions and the world-view of Turkmen people. Its ornamental uniqueness and symbolism reflects the mentality of the nation and historical and spiritual succession.
