International partners discussed support for Turkmenistan's efforts to implement the climate agenda

On May 31, 2024, the seventh coordination meeting of the Climate Group of Development Partners to accelerate Turkmenistan's progress in fulfilling its international obligations under the Paris Agreement took place at the Ecological Training and Carbon Training Center of the Bouygues Turkmen Company in Ashgabat. The meeting was organized by the UNDP Country Office in cooperation with the British Embassy in Turkmenistan.

The event was attended by representatives of UN Agencies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the diplomatic corps and international development partners, including USAID, the EU, the German Agency for International Cooperation, the OSCE Center in Ashgabat and non-governmental organizations.

The meeting provided a platform to discuss the actions of development partners within the country's climate agenda, including an update on activities following the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 and preparations for the upcoming COP29 Climate Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, scheduled for November 2024.

Participants were informed about Turkmenistan's current efforts to implement its Nationally Determined Contribution, including the preparation of the First Biennial Report and the Fourth National Communication on Climate Change in accordance with the reporting requirements of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as the Government's plans to fulfill obligations arising from its accession to the Global Methane Pledge.

International partners advocated for coordinated and active cooperation to support Turkmenistan's efforts in addressing climate change and environmental protection, including through the provision of global experience and technical support to ensure effective implementation of the country's climate agenda.

The Climate Group of Development Partners held regular coordination meetings, which serve as a platform for sharing information on current activities and planned projects aimed at supporting Turkmenistan's efforts in climate change mitigation, resilience building, and strengthening adaptation measures.
