Nature conservation is an area for uniting international efforts

Today in the large conference room of the administrative building of the country's agricultural complex, a scientific-practical conference “Turkmenistan – the region environmental well-being”, dedicated to the World Environment Day.

The forum, held annually, provides an opportunity to get acquainted with achievements in the field of ecology and the results of successful implementation of government programs initiated by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and continued by President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

The conference, held in a hybrid format, included participation of environmental managers and specialist’s structures and industry departments, the scientific community, universities and public associations of the country, authoritative international and regional organizations, including the UN and its specialized structures.

The forum was preceded by a show that took place in the administrative foyer building of the Agricultural Complex exhibition, which demonstrated the achievements of Turkmenistan in environmental sector. Books take pride of place here Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, as well as new, 4th publication of the Red Book of Turkmenistan, which has a huge importance in preserving the unique gene pool flora and fauna of the Fatherland.

Those present listened with great attention to the greeting Address by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to workers in the field of environmental protection of Turkmenistan.

As emphasized in the message of the head of state: “Ensuring sustainable development and environmental security on Earth is closely related to international cooperation. Having joined dozens of conventions on United Nations Environmental Protection Agency, our country approaches the decision with all responsibility challenges facing the global community for sustainable development".

World Environment Day established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 and since then celebrated in many countries, uniting the world the public in an effort to more actively unite in solving global problems of our time. This is a reason think about everyone's responsibility for the environment state of the planet and the need to take care of nature, as well as the opportunity to take an active part in preserving its beauty and riches for the benefit of future generations.

Celebrating World Environment Day in the era Revival of a new era of a powerful state relevant in the context of our foreign policy strategy country, a significant aspect of which is the unification efforts of the international community in solving important problems in environmental protection, implementation of environmental programs and projects both in the Central Asia region and in the world in general.

The plenary session was comprehensively covered multifaceted work carried out in Turkmenistan on ensuring environmental well-being and improving legislation in this direction. How was emphasized in accordance with national traditions respect for nature, measures are taken to environmental conservation, prudent use natural resources, development of a “green” economy.

Special mention was made of the active work ongoing in the country to implementation of the UNESCO program aimed at preserving and popularization of natural objects with special ecological significance. An example of this is the opened initiative of the head of state Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Turkmen universities of the UNESCO Department.

On the development of a fruitful partnership between Turkmenistan and authoritative international structures testify and inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List under multilateral dossier of the nomination “Turan Deserts” temperate zone", prepared through the international cooperation, State natural reserves "Bereketli Garagum", "Gaplaňgyr", State biosphere reserve "Repetek" and its desert ecosystems reserve "Ýerajy".

Connecting via video link, Deputy General Director and FAO Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia Viorel Gutu noted that the conference serves as a good platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing.

FAO Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia focused on the key role of agriculture economies and food systems in coping with change climate. In this context, it was emphasized that by increasing sustainability by adapting to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity can be protected and ensure food security for all.

At the plenary session, participants were presented video message from the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) A. Orazbay, which included implemented large-scale projects were announced restoration of the Aral Sea basin ecosystem and mitigation of the consequences of the environmental crisis within the framework of Action programs to assist the riparian countries Aral Sea (ASBP) and the Regional Protection Program environment for sustainable development of countries Central Asia (RPOOSD CA).

Then the forum continued its work in three sections, which were held simultaneously in the administrative building Agricultural complex of the country, Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov in Ashgabat and the Turkmen Agricultural Institute in city of Dashoguz. At the section “Main directions of international cooperation in the field of environmental protection" issues related to interaction were discussed Turkmenistan in the environmental sector.

As emphasized, having joined all the basic international conventions and agreements in the field of protection nature, our country demonstrates serious and responsible approach to their implementation, regularly speaking with important initiatives. Among them are those nominated by the head state proposals to ensure environmental security, rational environmental management, combating climate change, desertification, etc.

The speakers noted the importance of implementation in the country principles for sustainable pasture management, they said about experiences in the rational use of natural resources in arid regions, reducing methane emissions when production and transportation of natural gas, etc.

It was stated that Turkmenistan stands for development effective partnerships with other large organizations and structures, aiming to promote optimization interaction on issues the solution of which depends the future of all humanity.

Section “The role of ecology in the implementation of sustainable goals” development” included questions about the impact of irrigation innovative way on ecology, the importance of creating forest zones and implementation of the Turkmen Lake construction project "Altyn asyr" and others.

As noted, mass campaigns for planting seedlings, which have become in our country, a good tradition contributes to the creation new park and forest areas, enrichment of Turkmen flora and the formation of a favorable climate, which is important condition for ensuring environmental safety, health and well-being of the population. 

The topic of international scientific research on the study and conservation of biological diversity in specially protected natural areas our country.

It was noted that successfully implemented in modern era national strategy in this area harmoniously is consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals of the Community of Nations and priority tasks to protect the planet's ecosystems. At the session “Issues of improving the environmental condition Aral Sea region” is the subject of detailed discussion became the activities of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, work carried out in the states of the region to improve ecological condition and integrated use water resources of the Aral Sea basin under conditions climate change.

As emphasized, in recent decades in projects prepared to deal with natural disasters in the Aral Sea region, along with scientific methods, is promoting development of a complex of modern high technologies. These include remote sensing technology with using hyperspectral analysis of vegetation and soil cover of various landscapes, which contributes to the development of National plans aimed at conserving biodiversity, and monitor using a digital system.

Particular emphasis was placed on the main directions cooperation between the Caspian states in the field hydrometeorology, measures taken to reduce methane emissions in accordance with international principles environmental agreements.

The environmental aspects of the application were also discussed advanced water-saving technologies in countries with arid climate.

It was noted that Turkmenistan attaches special importance rational water use through widespread implementation achievements of science, modern, digital saving technologies, which in turn is closely related to the preservation environmental well-being. Effective measures are taken in order to improve the reclamation state lands, providing the population with clean drinking water.

The material and technical base of the industry is being strengthened in the regions reservoirs and other hydraulic engineering facilities are being commissioned structures.

Conference participants, as well as relevant workers adopted an Address of gratitude to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, in which they expressed their sincere gratitude for the effective steps taken to environmental protection, assuring that they will make every effort for the further successful implementation of environmentally significant projects to ensure sustainable environmental management. Celebrations on the occasion of World Conservation Day environmental issues were held in all velayats of the country.
