At the OSCE conference, participants discussed the improvement of national media in the context of global changes

An OSCE training conference aimed to improve media literacy among the national experts was held in Ashgabat from October 29 to 30. Among the invited international experts were Adil Jalilov, Duman Smakov and Ivan Pechishev.

The conference was organized within the OSCE project "Support for the implementation of the National Action Plan on Human Rights in Turkmenistan for 2021-2025".

The main aim of this event is to strengthen the potential of Turkmen specialists in the field of media literacy, and help them to effectively analyze information and verify its authenticity. Russian expert Ivan Pechishev joined the online training. In his speech, he noted important aspects of the media system, current problems and modern approaches to media literacy. He pointed out the need of information access and the ability to critically rate it.

International expert Adil Jalilov focused on combating the spread of false information in the media and presented various fact-checking tools used for verification. The experience of other countries in media and information literacy which makes it possible to effectively solve technological, economic and social challenges was also considered.

Duman Smakov noted that media and information literacy today includes not only knowledge of technology, but also critical thinking, the ability to find meaning and interpret information in professional and public activities. In his view, it’s become a key skill for all sectors of society.

The participants also discussed the importance of improving national media in the context of global changes.

At the end of the training, the participants were awarded with the certificates that underlines the OSCE's contribution to the development of media literacy in Turkmenistan and support for the professional growth of local specialists.
