Turkmen football players have twice participated in the final stages of the Asian Cup. For the first time – in 2004, when the tournament was held in China, and for the second time – in 2019 in the United Arab Emirates. In the previous draw, the Turkmen national team took 3rd place in the qualifying group "E" and did not reach the final tournament of the Asian Cup, which was held in Qatar in 2023.
The Asian Football Cup is held every four years. His first drawing took place in 1956. Since 2007, the tournament has been held in odd-numbered years. The current Asian champion is Qatar, which won the continental trophy twice in 2019 and 2023.
