The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings were launched by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. This ranking annually evaluates universities' contributions to sustainable development and environmental safety. In 2024, a total of 1,477 universities from 95 countries participated in the rankings.
University rankings are determined based on scores across six key indicators: Setting and Infrastructure; Energy and Climate Change; Waste Management; Water Management; Eco-Friendly Transportation; Education and Research.
Over the past two years, the number of Turkmen universities participating in the rankings has significantly increased. The first university from Turkmenistan to enter the UI GreenMetric rankings was the Telecommunications and Informatics Institute in 2021. In 2022, two more universities joined: the Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University and the Institute of Engineering, Technical and Transport Communications.
By 2023, eight Turkmen universities were included in the rankings, and this year, their number increased to eleven.
This achievement vividly demonstrates Turkmenistan's commitment to addressing critical global challenges in environmental sustainability and safety. The country is consistently fulfilling its international obligations as a participant in international agreements and conventions aimed at sustainable development, environmental protection, and the rational use of natural resources.
Furthermore, the active participation and achievements of Turkmen universities in UI GreenMetric and other prestigious international university rankings highlight the effective results of efforts to elevate the national education system to global standards.
