Although potatoes have only recently been grown on a large scale in the Dashoguz velayat, the high yields obtained each year show that the soil and climate conditions of the region are suitable for the production of this crop.
This year, 8,800 hectares of land have been allocated for spring potato planting in the velayat. The majority of them, 3,440 hectares, are located in the Akdepe etrap on two thousand hectares. Together with the Boldumsaz etrap they will become the largest producers of this culture in the region.
Farmers realize that the volume and quality of the future harvest largely depends on the choice and condition of the land plots, so, when preparing the areas for planting, they paid due attention to the timeliness and depth of plowing, soil leveling and other important agricultural practices. The seed material prepared for planting was based on potato varieties already adapted to local soil and climatic conditions, distinguished by high productivity and resistance to various diseases.
It should be noted that in recent years the volume of potato production in the velayat has exceeded 120 thousand tons. This has allowed potato growing to reach a qualitatively new level and turn it into a traditional direction of the agricultural industry for this region. This year, potato growers in the velayat intend to achieve a yield of at least 140 centners per hectare, which will make a significant contribution to the labor successes of farmers in the jubilee year of the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality.
