The results of the project "Development of the National Adaptation Planning Process in Turkmenistan" have been summarized

On April 10, 2025, the final conference of the project "Development of the National Adaptation Planning Process in Turkmenistan" was held at the Ýyldyz Hotel in Ashgabat.

The forum was attended by representatives from the public and private sectors, climate experts, staff of diplomatic missions, and international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan.

The project, implemented by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Green Climate Fund, was launched in 2021. It played a crucial role in strengthening the country's institutional and technical capacity in the field of climate change adaptation. Over four years, it successfully integrated climate risk assessments and adaptation planning into national development and financing processes.

Among the project's significant achievements is the creation of a framework for implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change, the collection of important data for planning in the water sector, and the development of stakeholders' capacity to effectively respond to climate challenges.

The project built on existing strategic documents, including Turkmenistan's National Climate Change Strategy (2019) and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC, 2022). It also created specific mechanisms for their implementation. Key outcomes include the development of the Roadmap for the National Adaptation Plan of Turkmenistan and the Concept for the Development of Climate Finance in the country. These documents formed the basis for presentations and discussions during the conference.

It is worth noting that National Adaptation Plans are a key element of global efforts to enhance resilience to climate change, serving as essential tools to reduce vulnerability and integrate adaptation into all levels of development planning.

The conference concluded with a ceremonial handover of educational materials—manuals on integrating climate change adaptation into water resource management—to relevant universities and research institutions in Turkmenistan.

As part of the conference, a photo exhibition titled "Climate Change – Time to Act" was organized, which highlighted the relevance of the climate change issue through expressive photographs. The exhibition reflected the real consequences of climate change in the region—from droughts and dust storms to shifting rural landscapes.

The results of the conference have become the foundation for Turkmenistan’s further efforts toward a sustainable climate future.
