The presentation of the UNICEF Report: Children in a Digital World – 2017 took place in the Representative Office of the United Nations Organisation in Turkmenistan.

The event brought together United Nations Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Ms. Elena Panova, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan, Ms. Shaheen Nilofer, the deputies of the national parliament, the specialists of various ministries and departments, the delegates of public organisations, students and journalists.

The main goal of the event is to inform people of the state of children in the modern world, given that more and more children go online around the world, it is increasingly changing childhood.

According to the UNICEF study, youth (ages 15–24) is the most connected age group. In this regard, it is important to cultivate the responsible attitude to the use of the Internet resources, computers and mobile digital devices in children. This topic was reflected in the reports, speeches and discussions prepared by the organizers.

Creating favorable conditions to ensure the happy life of the younger generation, guarantee the child’s rights and interests are one of the fundamental principles of the state policy of Turkmenistan. The comprehensive concern about our young compatriots, their harmonious development is the main goal of the progressive reforms implemented in our country under the leadership of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

During the presentation, it was noted that over the past 25 years, Turkmenistan has become a strategic partner of UNICEF, working closely on the common key tasks. On September 23, 1994, Turkmenistan ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is the first international document that covers a wide range of issues related to children - civil, economic, cultural, social and political areas.

One of the main priorities of the state policy is to provide the younger generation with all opportunities for the comprehensive physical and intellectual development. The UNICEF report on the state of children in the modern world reflects the trends of the 21st century that prove the growing role of the Internet space, which has become an important source of knowledge in the new era.

Underlining the signficant importance of digital technologies in the life of a modern society, the President of Turkmenistan has repeatedly emphasized the necessity to widely use them in the national education system. Therefore, today, all educational institutions, starting from a kindergarten to a higher educational institution, are provided with the necessary computer equipment, Internet access, and each student is provided with a personal laptop.

Moreover, the President of Turkmenistan pays particular attention to the physical and spiritual development of the Turkmen youth, the promotion of the healthy lifestyle and the creation of favorable conditions for practicing sports. Due to the comprehensive development and diversity of activities, the younger generation can fully implement its potential and become a part of the society.

The presentation of the students of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the International University for the Humanities and Development, who told how the Internet and high technologies became an integral part of their studies vividly proved the success of the youth policy pursued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was.

The students told how the global network helped them find important information, keep up of the main trends in the rapidly changing world of science, find new friends with common interests to implement joint training projects and much more. At the same time, they are aware of both the positive and negative aspects of a phenomenon like the Internet, and are responsive to its use, not forgetting the need to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.

During the event, the audience asked a lot of questions and the participants discussed with interest the most important topics related to the influence of digital technologies on young people, their worldview and thinking.

The main conclusion of the UNICEF presentation is that today it is necessary to find the more responsible approach to children's interaction with various electronic assistants and to encourage them to use educational programmes and reliable Internet- sites, as well as to remind about the importance of human communication outside the network and the need to lead a healthy lifestyle.
