India – Turkmenistan: a course to deepen partnership

A celebration of World Hindi Day was held at the Embassy of the Republic of India in Turkmenistan. During the event, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Bandaru Wilsonbabu reaffirmed the strategic importance of Turkmenistan as a key partner of India in the region.

In his speech, the diplomat emphasised that India was one of the first countries to recognise the independence of Turkmenistan in 1991. Today, states are linked not only by millennia-old historical roots, but also by common geopolitical interests.

The ambassador also announced the continuation of active political dialogue. It is expected that in 2026 the tradition of mutual high-level visits, established during the meetings of leaders of the two countries in 2010, 2015 and 2022, will be continued.

India is the fourth largest and fastest growing economy in the world. In this context, a willingness to share experience and technologies was expressed. Information technology and digitalisation, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, education and human resource development, and the mutually beneficial use of natural resources were identified as priority areas of cooperation.

During the celebration, special attention was paid to the development of cultural ties. The Ambassador expressed gratitude to the Government of Turkmenistan for popularising Indian culture, including music, dance, yoga, Ayurveda and cinema in Turkmenistan. The head of the diplomatic mission also thanked the faculty of the Turkmen national institute of world languages named after Dovletmammet Azady for their support in the study of Hindi, a language spoken by more than 600 million people worldwide.

The event featured literary compositions and musical numbers performed by Turkmen students, a demonstration of yoga skills, and a tasting of traditional Indian cuisine.

The current celebration became further evidence of the growing friendship between Ashgabat and New Delhi.
