Dashoguz Velayat Is Renowned for Its Melon and Orchard Produce

These days, fieldwork is in full swing for melon growers in the Dashoguz velayat, as they complete the sowing of various crops. The main producers of melons and gourds in the region are farmers from the Ruhubelent etrap and the Kunyaurgench etrap, where 800 hectares and 730 hectares of land have been allocated to these crops, respectively. Overall, across the velayat, melon and gourd crops will occupy 3,745 hectares this year.

Local agricultural producers, who have extensive experience in cultivating these crops, intend to harvest no less than 200 centners per hectare. They see the key factors for achieving high results in selecting high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties adapted to local climatic conditions, as well as in the timely and high-quality implementation of necessary agrotechnical measures.

The velayat is famous for its melon and orchard products, which have a long history of cultivation. For many years, efforts have been made here not only to preserve the flavor of melons, watermelons, pumpkins, and other produce, but also to improve their characteristics based on scientific recommendations. A winter variety of melon is widely known far beyond the velayat—it is not only juicy and sweet but also convenient for transportation to distant locations and has a long shelf life.

Significant work on improving various crops is also carried out by specialists of the Turkmen Agricultural Institute located in the velayat. For example, through selection and hybridization, they are working to develop new pumpkin varieties distinguished by high yields, rich flavor, resistance to various diseases, adaptability to cultivation on lands with different characteristics, and suitability to the soil and climatic conditions of the region.
