On May 26, 2026, as part of the visit to the United States, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, held a meeting with the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo. About this reports MFA of Turkmenistan.

During the conversation, the parties discussed a broad range of issues related to strengthening cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations. It was emphasized that Turkmenistan, following its status of permanent neutrality, consistently advocates for the promotion of preventive diplomacy, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the rule of international law in accordance with the UN Charter.

The Turkmen side highly appreciated the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) in Ashgabat and reaffirmed its commitment to further supporting and strengthening the Centre’s mandate. In this regard, the parties discussed the possibility of expanding the Centre’s tasks and areas of activity in order to enhance the effectiveness of regional cooperation, strengthen confidence-building measures, and develop preventive diplomacy.

Special attention during the talks was paid to issues of regional security, maintaining stability, and promoting mechanisms for peaceful settlement based on dialogue and trust.

A separate topic of discussion was Turkmenistan’s initiative to develop a Global Security Strategy, proposed by the President of Turkmenistan. The importance of this initiative for the formation of a sustainable and equitable international security system based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law was emphasized.

The meeting also addressed issues related to the practical implementation of Turkmenistan’s initiative to establish a University of Peace and Neutrality jointly with the United Nations. The first step in this direction was the establishment of the Department of Peace and Neutrality at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. At the initial stage, it is planned to launch a specialized master’s program within the department and to develop cooperation with the United Nations University for Peace.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties emphasized the importance of joint efforts to ensure peace and sustainable development through the implementation of major infrastructure and regional projects aimed at strengthening connectivity, stability, and economic cooperation. In particular, the significance of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline project as an important factor in ensuring regional peace, sustainable development, and energy security was highlighted.
