On 30 August, as part of the working visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan to Turkmenistan, a briefing was held for representatives of the mass media. Toshihiro Kitamura, Director-General for Press and Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, addressed journalists, summarizing the interim results of bilateral cooperation and outlining promising areas for further developing ties between the two countries.
In his remarks, the Japanese Foreign Ministry representative emphasized the high level of trust between the two countries, noting that next year will mark 35 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992.
“Japan highly appreciates Turkmenistan’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region as a neutral state. Tokyo’s co-sponsorship of the international resolution on Turkmenistan’s neutrality is confirmation of this position,” stated the diplomat.
Particular attention during the briefing was devoted to joint high-tech and educational initiatives. In particular, Japan intends to develop cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. Online training programmes are planned to be launched on the basis of a specialized laboratory at the University of Tokyo, along with projects to establish data centres in Turkmenistan for AI research and practical training.
The official representative of the Japanese Foreign Ministry also noted the steady growth of humanitarian and cultural exchanges.
“Japan expresses its deep appreciation for the growing popularity of the Japanese language among Turkmen youth from year to year,” emphasized Toshihiro Kitamura.
The speaker also highlighted the great success of the Turkmenistan Pavilion at EXPO 2025 in Osaka, whose rich exhibition enabled residents and visitors to Japan to learn more about the country’s history and modern achievements.
In conclusion, the Japanese diplomat reaffirmed that Tokyo regards Turkmenistan as a reliable partner in strengthening an open and free international order and expressed confidence in the continued dynamic development of the multifaceted dialogue between the two countries.
