The 111th meeting of the Economic Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was held at the Ýyldyz Hotel in the capital. The meeting demonstrated Turkmenistan’s commitment to expanding multilateral economic dialogue and effectively unlocking the trade and investment potential of the CIS countries.
Summing up the results of the forum in his remarks to journalists, CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev noted the high level of organisation and the productivity of the meeting. According to him, 28 agenda items were considered during the session, and key decisions were adopted, confirming the successful development of economic cooperation.
The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth recalled that the meeting was taking place in the year marking the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the CIS and the declaration of independence by the majority of its member states, including neutral Turkmenistan. He emphasised that over the past three and a half decades, the economic independence of these countries has demonstrated its effectiveness and viability, particularly in recent years through the strengthening of cooperative ties.
“Economic cooperation has become closer, and a great many organisations have been established to promote joint economic cooperation. At present, 56 sectoral councils are operating within the framework of the Commonwealth,” stated the Secretary-General.
In his remarks, Sergey Lebedev paid particular attention to the strategic role of the transport sector and the unique importance of Turkmenistan as a transit and logistics hub.
“All the key transport routes—the East–West corridor and both branches of the North–South corridor along the western and eastern coasts of the Caspian Sea—pass through the territory of Turkmenistan. The country pays enormous attention to the transport sector, for which we express our sincere gratitude to the Turkmen Government. Overall, over the past 35 years, judging by all objective indicators, the economies of the CIS member states have been developing successfully,” stated the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
