As part of the celebration of World ozone day, observed annually on the 16th of September, Turkmenistan organised awareness-raising events for schoolchildren aimed at increasing environmental awareness among the younger generation and fostering a caring attitude toward the environment.
The organisers focused on the preservation of the ozone layer, its role in protecting life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, and the importance of environmentally responsible behaviour in everyday life. Participants formed teams of ten, chose captains, came up with names and mottos, and then completed several educational stages.
The first stage was «Question and answer». The students demonstrated their knowledge of the importance of the ozone layer, the causes of its destruction, ozone-depleting substances, and household appliances that may use these refrigerants. The competition format not only tested knowledge of the students but also made learning about environmental topics more engaging.
During the second stage of the «Eco-logistics» practical game, participants were asked to identify which products and common everyday items could have a negative impact on the environment and select more environmentally friendly alternatives for them. The students discussed their decisions and explained why one or another option was safer for the environment.
The third stage was the «Captains competition». Team captains received descriptions of environmental situations and, within a limited time, prepared messages addressed to the public, young people, or business representatives. The evaluation took into account the persuasiveness of the presentation, emotional expressiveness and the accuracy of the environmental information presented.
Participants were also shown visual materials about the depletion of the ozone layer and the effects of ultraviolet radiation. The interactive format allowed schoolchildren to engage in discussions of current issues and demonstrate that contributing to environmental protection can begin with simple and conscious decisions made by each individual.
Conducting such informational and educational events promotes the development of environmental thinking among young people, increases awareness of global environmental challenges, and increases understanding of the importance of international and national efforts to protect the ozone layer.
World ozone day once again reminds us that maintaining a healthy environment and protecting our planet requires the combined efforts of the state, the international community, and every individual.
