President Serdar Berdimuhamedov Outlines Turkmenistan’s Priorities in Biodiversity Conservation

On October 16, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov addressed the Leaders’ Summit of the UN Biodiversity Conference in Yerevan. In his speech, the head of state emphasized that preserving the country’s rich natural heritage—from the Garagum Desert to the mountain ranges of the Kopetdag and Koytendag and the Caspian Sea coast—is one of the most important priorities of state policy.

Several key areas were identified as priorities of Turkmenistan’s environmental strategy.

To protect rare species of flora and fauna and develop environmental monitoring, the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for 2026–2035 has been developed in cooperation with international partners. Particular attention is being paid to the conservation of transboundary ecosystems and animal migration routes, the environmental well-being of the Caspian Sea, the preservation of the Aral Sea basin, and combating desertification.

At the same time, the country seeks to make the fullest possible use of the potential of the United Nations and its specialized agencies to conduct joint scientific research, protect water resources, and introduce advanced monitoring methods. In this regard, Turkmenistan reaffirmed its readiness to provide all the necessary conditions for implementing global environmental agreements.

The President of Turkmenistan also placed particular emphasis on the fact that effectively addressing the environmental challenges facing the international community requires coordinated efforts, scientifically sound decisions, and long-term mechanisms for cooperation.
