Winter garlic has become one of the cultivated agricultural crops in the Dashoguz velayat of Turkmenistan. This year, it has once again been planted on an area of 780 hectares. The largest areas have been allocated in S. Turkmenbashi etrap, with 150 hectares, and Garashsyzlyk etrap, with 140 hectares. It is worth noting that in recent years, farmers in the velayat have gained considerable experience in successfully growing garlic under local weather and climatic conditions. Their choice of suitable varieties adapted to the region, characterized by high yields and resistance to disease, along with the selection of appropriate land for cultivation and the timely implementation of necessary agricultural practices to care for the crops, enables them to achieve good results year after year. This also allows them to supply consumers with sufficient quantities of high-quality produce.
Local farmers are also hoping to harvest at least 80 centners of garlic per hectare of planted land this year. It should be noted that, when choosing produce at the market, many residents of the region prefer locally grown garlic because of its distinctive taste and long shelf life.
The velayat has long been renowned for its farming expertise. A wide variety of agricultural crops are grown here. The substantial volumes of production enable the region to supply consumer markets with fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year while keeping prices affordable for the population.
To ensure that harvested crops are properly preserved, the region has a sufficient number of specialized storage facilities, including modern refrigerated storage units of various types that have been built in recent years.
