As was reported, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov spotlighted such a critical issue the environmental protection and defined the approaches to tackling the climate change challenge, efficiently using water resources and combating desertification on a global scale in his speech before the 66th session of the UN General Assembly. Paying particular attention to ecological issues and taking consistent steps to protect the environment, Turkmenistan advocates promotion of closer contacts with the UN and other authoritative international organisations to address these issues.
The consistency of Turkmenistan’s efforts at the international level is illustrated by the fact that in 2007 Turkmenistan put forward the initiative for developing the regional project on climate change. Promoting this initiative, Turkmenistan proposed at 66th session of the UN General Assembly to establish the interregional centre on climate change under the United Nations and expressed the readiness to provide all necessary conditions for the establishment and effective work of this centre in Ashgabat during the.
It should be noted that Turkmen put forward this initiative relying on its profound experience in the sphere of effective and efficient use of water resources, prevention of salinization and construction of the drainage network to improve soil conditions in the region.
In the epoch of new Revival and great changes the large-scale reforms, which have an impact on the improvement of social and living conditions of people, have been launched in the water industry. And the fact that President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov keeps the process of reforms under control guarantees that these reforms are implemented and accelerated.
In this context the key aspects include the modernisation of the agro-industrial sector, including the water industry that plays a crucial role in providing citizens with fresh drinking water, including new irrigated areas in crop rotation, improving soil conditions of arable lands throughout the country and most importantly developing a responsible approach to efficient use of life-giving water that is of crucial importance in arid regions.
The critical aspect of the national programmes aimed at guaranteeing a prosperous life to citizens of Turkmenistan, in particular protecting the people’s health, is the construction of drinking water plants, desalination units, water storage reservoirs and water treatment facilities in all regions of the country and the continuing modernisation of the material and technical basis of the water industry.
In accordance with the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan the fleet of the Ministry of Water Industry has been replenished with new B10M.0101-1E1 bulldozers of 100 units to be purchased from the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant-URALTRAK Limited Liability Company (Russian Federation). Currently this equipment is engaged in the work on consolidation of the banks of the Karakum River and construction facilities of the Altyn Asyr Turkmen Lake.
The completion of the first stage of construction of this important water facility that is one of the largest artificial hydraulic structures in the world significantly facilitated implementation of the state water management policy under the leadership of the President of Turkmenistan in the epoch of new Revival and great reforms.
The second stage of the construction of the Altyn Asyr Turkmen Lake had been started. The construction of bridges, hydraulic structures regulating water flow and water sedimentation tanks is currently under way. Also, the operations to widen and deepen drainage channels of the Turkmen Lake and sewage facilities are carried out in the regions of the country.
Under the General Programme on the improvement of pure drinking water supply to settlements of Turkmenistan the water storage reservoir with the capacity of one billion cubic metres and water drain were put into operation in February this year. These facilities are connected to the eastern water treatment works of the Gundogar drinking water plant near Ashgabat. These days specialists of the Ministry of Water Industry are completing the construction of a water reservoir on the Sekizyap River with the capacity of one billion cubic metres in Geoktepe Etrap in Ahal Velayat and Shirdepe water distribution unit located 25 kilometres down the Dostluk dam.
During the working trip to Ahal Velayat early September President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov gave a start to the construction of a new water storage reservoir nearby Gozgangala settlement in Kaakha Etrap. The future hydraulic facility with the capacity of 5.2 million cubic metres will protect neighbouring settlements and arable lands against flood, collect irrigation water and provide neighbouring settlements and villages with drinking water.
The construction of similar water storage reservoirs under the General Programme on the improvement of pure drinking water supply to settlements of Turkmenistan has been launched in the other regions of our country.
The main goal of the ongoing reforms in this sphere in the epoch of new Revival is to modernise water supply networks, improve the living conditions of citizens and supply tap water to people in remote rural areas. Furthermore, the implementation of these measures will enable to efficiently use existing water resources efficiently, reduce water loss and provide citizens of Turkmenistan with pure drinking water.
This approach to using natural resources including water underlies certainly the aspiration of the Turkmen state to make a worthy contribution to addressing water management issues for the benefit and peace of the peoples in the region.
