President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe noted that Turkmen-Japanese cooperation was an important component of relations between Turkmenistan and the Asia-Pacific region during the talks which were held on the first day of the visit. The sides were unanimous that Turkmenistan and Japan were seeking to use their potential as well as the geopolitical and geo-economic benefits to create the conditions conducive to mutually beneficial cooperation.
The sides reaffirmed their commitment to peace, security and stability in the regional and global dimensions.
Particular attention was paid to bilateral partnership in the trade and economic sectors. The energy, transport and telecommunications sectors and water management were identified as the promising areas for cooperation.
The sides emphasized that Japan ranked among the strategic and dependable economic partners of Turkmenistan. In this regard, the sides were expected to sign a package of documents, which will facilitate the implementation of the projects of a number of large-scale enterprises to be built in Turkmenistan jointly with Japanese partners, which total over US$ 10 billion, during the Turkmen leader’s visit to Japan.
The signing ceremony took place after the talks.

The Agreement on Technical Cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of Japan, the Programme of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for 2013-2014, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Development and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Turkmengaz State Concern and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation were signed.
Then the President of Turkmenistan and the Prime Minister of Japan gave a press conference, during which they highly evaluated the results of the talks and bilateral documents signed.
On the second day of the official visit to Japan President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was received by Emperor Akihito of Japan and held meetings with the representatives and leaders of Turkmenistan-Japan Friendship League at the Parliament of Japan and the business circles of Japan.
In the morning, the President of Turkmenistan received a delegation of the Parliament of Japan led by the Chairperson of Turkmenistan-Japan Friendship League. During the meeting the sides discussed the prospects for building up Turkmen-Japanese cooperation, in particular intensifying inter-parliamentary and cultural contacts as an important factor for strengthening bilateral relations. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov invited the representatives of Turkmenistan-Japan Friendship League to visit Turkmenistan.
Then the Turkmen leader headed to the Palace of Emperor Akihito.
The President of Turkmenistan and the Emperor of Japan exchanged views on the prospects for fostering an international dialogue and identified the trade and economic sectors as a priority area for mutually beneficial partnership in a very friendly atmosphere.
The sides paid particular attention to cooperation in the humanitarian sphere and called for the further strengthening of cultural ties.
Cooperation in science and education was identified as not less important. Focusing on the fact that Tokyo was elected as the venue for the 2020 Olympic Games, the Turkmen leader cordially congratulated Emperor Akihito on the momentous occasion and wished Japanese athletes high achievements in competitions. Upon concluding the meeting, His Majesty Akihito introduced his son Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan to the President of Turkmenistan.
During the conversation President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov invited Crown Prince Naruhito to visit Turkmenistan at any convenient time. The invitation was accepted with gratitude. The dates of a visit will be adjusted through diplomatic channels.
In the afternoon, the Turkmen leader visited the headquarters of Sony Corp. A 4K and 3D film about the latest developments and innovations of Sony Corp. was demonstrated during the presentation.
After the presentation had been concluded, the President of Turkmenistan visited the Expo Centre of Sony Corp.
Exchange of views on the current condition and prospects of cooperation between Sony Corp. and Turkmenistan took place during the meeting. President and CEO of Sony Corp. Mr. Kazuo Hirai noted that the business community of his country highly evaluated the potential and growing capacity of key sectors of Turkmen economy that is dynamically integrated into the system of international economic relations. In this regard, emphasis was placed on keen interest of Sony Corp. in building up cooperation with Turkmenistan.
The strengthening of the material and technical basis of the mass media in Turkmenistan, deliveries of medical equipment, communications systems and cutting edge technologies for the dynamically developing recreation and entertainment industries were identified as the possible area for future partnership. The business talks focused on possible involvement of Sony Corp. in the preparation and holding of the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which Ashgabat will be hosting in 2017.
