Ashgabat hosts the WHO European Ministerial Conference on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020 organized by the Government of Turkmenistan and the WHO Regional Office for Europe. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the solemn ceremony of opening of the International forum.
The conference brought together the representatives and experts of the World Health Organization, WHO Regional Office for Europe as well as the delegates from 36 countries of the WHO European region, including ministries of health care, scientists and other specialists in the Turkmen capital. The cabinet ministers, the heads and representatives of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, other ministries and departments and medical institutions of our country represent Turkmenistan at the conference. The heads of the diplomatic representations and missions accredited in Turkmenistan were invited to attend the opening ceremony. The main goal of the conference in Ashgabat is to discus a wide range of issues regarding the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases.
Addressing the forum participants, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed deep gratitude to the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for Europe and the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Zsuzsanna Jakab for the significant contribution to the organization of this important conference and wished all participants of the forum fruitful work.
Then the Turkmen leader gave the floor to the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Zsuzsanna Jakab.
"It was only two years ago that Member States met in Moscow at the first global ministerial meeting on NCDs, in New York and adopted the Political Declaration on noncommunicable diseases (NCD), and agreed on the European NCD Action Plan in Baku, all this against the backdrop of the development of the new European health policy, Health 2020. Health 2020 responds to the changing context in Europe, aiming to address health inequities within and between countries, the impact of globalization and new technologies, the aging population, concerns about the financial sustainability of health systems, the changing role of citizens and, importantly, the particularly alarming growth of NCDs", said Zsuzsanna Jakab. "We shall, over the next two days, be reviewing the progress made since then in Europe. The programme of the conference, and the Ashgabat.
Declaration, where you all have been working on, reflect the state of the art and is visionary at the same time".
Thanking the distinguished guest for the speech, the President of Turkmenistan gave floor to the Executive Director of the Director-General's Office Dr. Hans Troedsson.
Addressing the Turkmen leader, Dr. Hans Troedsson expressed deep gratitude for the organization of the first Regional conference on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases in our country and the hospitality provided to the foreign guests.
Underlining the significance of the NCD problem, Dr. Hans Troedsson underlined that the agreement on the strategic vision on how to control NCD had been achieved at the global level and the grandiose plan aimed at reducing mortality caused by the NCD by 25 percent in 2025 had been drafted. In this regard, the distinguished guest noted that the solution of the NCD problem required consolidated effective efforts in all areas.
Emphasizing the importance of the Ashgabat Declaration to be adopted within the framework of this conference, Dr. Hans Troedsson focused on the necessity of taking the urgent actions from the countries, including the national plans for 2025 and the national multi-aspect strategies to address NDCs.
Thanking all those speaking, the President of Turkmenistan wished the conference participants fruitful and successful work and left the venue.
