A meeting with a delegation of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly that had arrived in Turkmenistan to monitor the parliamentary elections took place at the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
A lively exchange of views of the current state and prospects of further development of inter-parliamentary cooperation, which is an important component of a constructive interstate dialogue on bilateral and multilateral basis, particularly within the major and authoritative international organisations and institutions, took place during the meeting.
Highly evaluating the steps taken by independent neutral Turkmenistan along the way of broad democratic reforms, the guests assured that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe stood ready to provide further assistance to the Turkmen side in holding open, free and democratic elections in accordance with the universally recognized standards.
It was noted that an exchange of experiences and the study of the international standards and practices in the preparation for and conducting of elections through seminars on the development of parliamentary institutions, meetings with foreign experts and visits abroad to study electoral processes were of particular importance in this context.
Demonstrating openness of Turkmenistan to mutually beneficial cooperation, the leaders of the Turkmen Parliament assured that favourable working conditions would be created for invited international observers so that they would conduct free and impartial monitoring of the election campaign and the elections to the Mejlis of Turkmenistan of the fifth convocation.
During the visit to Turkmenistan the delegation of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly will hold a series of meetings at the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan and with representatives of the two parties participating in the parliamentary elections - the Democratic Party and the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.
