A meeting of the Organizing Committee of the V Asian Games Indoors and Martial Arts took place in the Turkmen capital with the participation of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The Turkmen leader pays close attention to the preparations for the Asian Games, which Ashgabat will be hosting in 2017. The President attaches significant importance to this multisport event, which is to enhance Turkmenistan’s prestige in the sports world, promote the sports movement and healthy lifestyles in our country and involve the greater number of children and young people in sports and physical activity.

Vast opportunities to turn Ashgabat in the large centre of sports activities are opened up today. The Turkmen capital has a number of stadiums, the Ice Palace, the Water Sports Centre, the Winter Sports Centre and many other sports facilities. A testament to Turkmenistan’s aspirations to new heights and world achievements is the Olympic Village under construction in Ashgabat where the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games will take place in a few years. A crucial factor in adopting this decision by the Olympic Council of Asia is the role of the President of Turkmenistan, who has determined the development of physical culture and sports as a state policy priority. It should be noted that the leader of Turkmenistan, President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan received the highest award of the Olympic Council of Asia – the Order of Honour - for his contribution to promoting sports.

The construction of the largest Olympic Village in Central Asia was launched at the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov three years ago. The Turkmen leader visited the construction sites in the sports complex last month to see the progress in implementing the ambitious project. When visiting the sports complex late November, the participants of the international media forum dedicated to the 2017 Asian Games – journalists and correspondents of dozens of foreign TV and radio channels and print media – expressed their admiration for the scale of construction.

On that day, the Turkmen leader drove to the Sport Hotel in the Olympic Village where the Chairperson of the Mejlis, the Vice Premiers, the Ashgabat Khyakim and the high-ranking military and law enforcement officials had gathered together. The President accompanied by his associates entered the foyer of the hotel where the draft designs of sports facilities of the Olympic Village, the symbols of the 2017 Asian Games and the model of the sports complex were presented to the Turkmen leader for consideration.

These were the interior and exterior decoration designs of different facilities and buildings, including the hotels, which accommodate 800 and 450 visitors, the Olympic Stadium, multipurpose sports complexes, an indoor cycling track, which accommodates 6,000 spectators, the indoor athletic arenas, which accommodate 5,000 and 15,000 spectators, an indoor swimming pool, which accommodates 5,000 spectators, and an indoor tennis court, which accommodates 4,000 spectators. The projects presented for consideration included the business centre, the ground floor of which will be occupied by the State Committee for Sport, the rehabilitation and medical centre, a multilevel car park, a restaurant and other infrastructure facilities. Over 30 facilities will be built in the Olympic Village, the construction of which is carried out in three phases. A monorail railway will be built in the huge area of the Olympic Village.

The Turkmen leader paid particular attention to the interior decoration of new facilities and buildings in terms of the perceptual psychology of athletes and their emotional state, emphasizing the importance of taking a ‘zonal’ approach to beautify the area and facilities in the Olympic Village. Noting that along with outstanding physical abilities and sports techniques the psychological factor plays a critical role in gaining remarkable sports achievements, the President said that the latest methods in this field should be applied. The main requirements are to offer comforts to athletes, spectators and create favourable working conditions for many other specialists and experts in event planning and services.

The draft designs of the torch, mascot and sets of medals of the 2017 Asian Games - the trophies of sports competitions, the templates of certificates, etc. were presented to the Turkmen leader for consideration. Upon considering them, the President provided comments and recommendations, including on the creation of an easily recognizable image, which will convey the national colours in the design and the symbols of the Asian Games in Ashgabat.
