President of Turkmenistan attends the commemorative ceremony on occasion of the Memorial Day

Turkmenistan commemorated the defenders of the Geoktepe fortress on January 12. The flags were lowered throughout Turkmenistan to mark the Memorial Day. The Turkmen people mourned over their heroes and bowed down before their fortitude. They mourned over those old men, women and young citizens of the Geoktepe fortress who together with valorous defenders withstood the superior numbers of enemy troops and those innocent victims who spilled their blood for the native land.


Following the Muslim customs and the traditions of the Turkmen people, commemorative sadaqahs were given and a public prayers for the repose of the souls of our compatriots whose lives had been taken away during the Battle of Geoktepe and all sons and daughters who had sacrificed their lives for freedom and independence of the Motherland and protected the national identity and dignity.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the commemorative ceremony which took place in the Geoktepe memorial complex. The cabinet ministers, the heads of the Mejlis, military and law enforcement agencies, ministries and departments, diplomatic missions and representations accredited to Turkmenistan, khyakims of Ashgabat and velayats, members of the public organisations, journalists, mullahs and young citizens of the region participated in the ceremony. The ceremony venue was the square in front of the mosque built on the place where the Battle of Geoktepe that added the pages of unprecedented heroism and courage, dignity and valour to the history of the Turkmen people and become our great pride and deep sorrow had taken place. Thousands of Turkmen citizens came there on that day to pay tribute to the fallen national heroes, relatives and friends, all the compatriots who had untimely deceased.


The Mufti of Turkmenistan, the Chairman of the Council for religion under the President of Turkmenistan, the imam of Geoktepe Etrap, cabinet ministers, the heads of the Mejlis, military and law enforcement agencies and khyakims of Ashgabat and velayats greeted the Turkmen leader The State Anthem of Turkmenistan sounded. The representative of the Turkmen youth swore solemnly allegiance to the Fatherland, and the representative of the soldiers of the National Army of Turkmenistan swore an oath to defend the sacred Motherland, serve the people, the country and the President of Turkmenistan. Then the official part of the ceremony took place. On the square in front of the Geoktepe Mosque theatrical artists and musicians presented a bright theatrical and musical performance dedicated to courageous defenders of the Geoktepe fortress. The baton of the heroic and glorious traditions of the Turkmen people was symbolically passed to the younger generation during the performance.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov talked to the elders about their everyday concerns and wished them good health and long life. The elders expressed deep gratitude to the Turkmen leader for his unceasing concern for the people’s welfare and titanic efforts to enrich the spiritual traditions of the nation and promote the ongoing ambitious reforms for the benefit of the Motherland. Then, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and ceremony participants entered the Geoktepe Mosque where they participated in a public prayer. The Mufti of Turkmenistan and the imams of Ashgabat and all velayats read the ayats of the Holy Koran.


The prayers commemorating Turkmen heroes who had sacrificed their lives for freedom of the Motherland and all those who had died a hero’s death for the bright future of the Turkmen people were offered up in the halls of the Geoktepe Mosque crowded with ceremony participants. The Turkmen leader left the Mosque after the public prayer was concluded. The President headed to the building where a commemorative sadaqa would take place. Addressing the Mufti and the heads of the Council for Religion under the President of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen leader focused on the importance of a contribution that the elders made to bringing up the younger generation to respect the ancestors’ lofty spiritual and moral principles and the age-old traditions of the Turkmen people and love devotedly the Motherland.

Before taking part in the commemorative meal, the ceremony participants offered up the prayers for the peace of the souls of victims of the Battle of Geoktepe and all those who had sacrificed their lives for freedom of the Motherland, for peace and cohesion, prosperity and wellbeing of the native land. The Turkmen leader addressed ceremony participants. “Let Allah Almighty accept and bless all sadaqahs each of you are giving on the Memorial Day as a tribute to the memory of your deceased relatives and the prayers being offered up today for peace and wellbeing of our independent Motherland and the Turkmen people.” The commemorative sadaqas were given and the prayers were offered up on occasion of the Hatyra Güni in all cities and settlements in Turkmenistan.
